Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) - Space utilisation and energy efficiency
MMA’s work on the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) in its first phase showcases her application of PAS 2038 principles in retrofitting a Grade II listed building. The project in Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter involved creating mezzanines and lightwells in double-height spaces to improve space utilisation and energy efficiency without compromising the historic fabric.
To achieve this, Maggie led a multi-disciplinary team that included fire engineers, acoustic engineers, and heritage consultants. The project’s conservation philosophy was centred around minimal intervention, utilising digital tools like thermal dynamic modelling to assess and mitigate risks to the structure. These models helped inform decisions about necessary interventions to improve thermal performance while protecting the building’s heritage value.
“Maggie Mullan (and her associates) have been and are the most professional and agreeable architects we have worked with. Unfortunately, we’ve had plenty of experience with reverse. Maggie responds promptly, provides creative solutions and embraces change. She project manages to ensure that work comes in on time and on budget. And if there are budget changes, these are fully discussed to ensure there are no surprises.”
The project balanced the need for modernisation with strict adherence to conservation guidelines, ensuring that energy efficiency measures were appropriately tailored to the historic building’s specific needs. By using PAS 2038 guidelines, Maggie ensured that interventions like mechanical ventilation and insulation upgrades were integrated without affecting the building’s cultural significance.
